The only other kid nearby is Whynd Perkins, an eleven-year-old girl with a self-confessed case of curiosity disorder on a mission to contact the hotel’s resident ghost. Diego has no interest in ghosts or hanging out with a girl who asks way too many questions, but when he learns that Whynd spent last summer at a camp for kids with cancer and her best friend died, he is drawn into her quest. If the ghost can help Whynd send a message to her friend, maybe the ghost can help him send a message as well. A message that just might unwind the tangled fishing line of guilt stuck inside his gut.

When Diego discovers a missing letter and the role the hotel manager may have played in hiding it, Diego is more determined than ever to find the ghost. Hanging out with Whynd, however, means trying to save turtle eggs from being smashed, sneaking around on fire escapes without being caught by the icy hotel manager, and almost getting his father fired. It also means learning how to catch squid by moonlight, overcoming his fear of horses, and unraveling the mystery of the elusive Clossie Mott.

Before the summer ends Diego realizes that living in an old, haunted hotel is kind of cool and hanging out with someone who asks a lot of questions, can help you find unexpected answers.
